1) Central Committee for Food Standards

Central Committee for Food Standards is concerned with the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act. It specifies standards for food items to check food adulteration and fraudulent practices. So we discuss about Food Standardization and Regulatory Agencies in India in this article.

Since 1941, CCFS has been functioning to advise the Central and State Governments on matters arising out of the administration of the PFA Act. The PFA Act, 1954 and the PFA Rules, provide guidelines for the minimum basic requirements of food quality.

Such as handling, storage, preparation and serving of food under sanitary conditions; freedom from extraneous matter, use of approved food additives such as preservatives, flavours, colours, etc.

Proper packag ing, branding and declaration of net weight as well as the date of manufac ture and packing on the package. The guidelines of primarily intended to protect consumers from the our health hazards of poisonous food.

They also serve to prevent consumer to malpractices such as misbranding, adulteration, incorrect labelling, false claims use of food additives., etc.

There are at present four Central Food Laboratories:

1) Central Food Laboratory, Kolkata,

2) Food Research and Standardization Laboratory, Ghaziabad;

3) Public Health Laboratory, Pune

4) Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI), Mysore.

2) Central and State Food Departments

Which come under the Ministry of Food and Civil Supplies, formulate specifications for cereal foodgrains/ pulses and selected foodstuff for purchase and procurement operations.

3) State Food Laboratories/Food and Drug Administration

Generally under the Department of Health-These are law-enforcing authorities to check food adulteration.

4) Bureau of Indian Standards

The then Indian Standards Institution has been constituted under the Act of Parliament which deals with standardiza tion of various articles including food. Agriculture Food Division Council (AFDC) deals with quality standards of various articles of food.

This organi zation prepares National standards for various articles of food in consulta tion with the experts in the country. The certification scheme under ISI is a voluntary one and any manufacturer who wants to use ISI mark on his food product may apply for the same to the authority.

The authorities after in spection and other formalities permit the manufacturer to use ISI Mark on their product. ISI symbol on any product give quality to the consumers. Recently, ISI has been changed name as Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).

5) Food corporation of India | Food Standardization and Regulatory Agencies in India

It has laid down specifications for several food commodities for internal purchase and procurement. To meet the essential requirements of the people in respect of rice, wheat, other cereals, pulses and gram products.

The FCI procures these items in season, stores them and then distributes according to need the stored foodstuffs to the public through fair price shops. The foodstuffs are stored in godowns, silos storage facilities specially built for the purpose at several places in the country.

Modern rice mills, soybean processing units and solvent extraction plants are maintained by the FCI to help in food processing. Besides, the FCI has provision to make nutritious foods such as fortified atta and Balah on a very limited scale.

Portable grain driers and food crop grain purifiers developed by the Corporation serve to furnish clean and dry grain to consumers in addition to ensuring better prices to the farmer.

6) Army Supply Corps

It has stipulated A.S.C. specifications for supply of food commodities to Army purchase organizations.

7) Central Insecticide Board

Under the Department of Agriculture, con trols the use of insecticides as applied to food crops. Under the Insecticide Act, all insecticide are requires to be compulsorily registeres with the Registration Committee establishes under section 5 of the Act.

Registration certificates are issues after the Committee is satisfies that the insecticide is effective in pest control. he same time safe to human beings, domes tic animals and wild life.
